Little Wing – the most important Rock and Roll song of all time?
OK, this is my first music post so it better be a good one, eh? If you read this and are not moved, please let me know. If you are moved please post a response as well.
Little Wing #1 - the most important rock and roll song of all time? There are only three reactions to this comment. 1) He’s right I already came to this conclusion 2) Hmm I never really thought about this, but I have an open mind, 3) No F*&#king Way! He is crazy!! What about ____________.
For the number 1′s and 2′s who might want to read this, here is my logic. Everyone knows that Little Wing is one of Hendrix’s greatest pieces. It is an extremely imaginative tune and of course the guitar playing is pure Hendrix with some of his best solos ever!! But if we were just talking Hendrix here, there is no way that this tune would be #1 of all time. Of course many others reading this will remember that The One and Only Stevie Ray Vaughn – SRV also performed Little Wing. I actually don’t think of it as a cover but more a tribute, incredible in its own right. Listen to and watch SRV’s Austin City Limits DVD. WOW, Texas Flood is sheer perfection!!! But so is Little Wing, an amazing performance!!
Ok some may say. Hendrix and, SRV, both excellent, but both also did Red House, another great Hendrix tune. I’m understanding of that. Here is the clincher. Eric Clapton did this tune on the Derrick and the Dominoes album. Yes, and for any doubters, Duane Allman plays on the track. Ok, let’s be clear, there is one song performed by Hendrix, SRV, Clapton and Duane Allman. If one accepts the fact that guitar is the most important instrument in Rock and Roll and that Little Wing is a guitarist’s song, the fact that these 4 guitarists, arguably 4 of the best ever, has to make Little Wing the most important Rock and Roll song ever!!!!
