Moody Blues – Hard Rock Live – March 8th, 2010
Ah, the Moody Blues. I loved them when I was younger! I have vivid memories listening to their tunes from “Threshold of a Dream”. That was the coolest record. Amazing synth, vocals, guitars. Dear Diary, Are You Sitting Comfortably and so many other awesome songs. The question you ask yourself when it comes to seeing bands where the musicians are obviously getting older, is: can they still perform? The Who are still great but Roger sometimes has trouble hitting the high notes. Same thing when you see Collective Soul, can Ed Roland stay in key and belt out the lyrics to “December”? Luckily there has never been an issue when it comes to Mick Jagger. That dude still has it and he brings it every night.
When it comes to the Moody’s, of course Justin Hayward is the key, both lead vocalist and lead guitarist. It turns out that he is just ridiculously good at both. In that sense I compare him to David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. As much as I like Roger Waters, it is Gilmour whom I believe is indispensable. I would say the same about Justin Hayward, he is absolutely the sound of the Moody Blues.
Fortunately for me, Justin still brings it. Both his vocals and his guitar chops were spot on. His voice still has that distinctive sound and he hits the high and the low notes. He actually has a fairly incredible range. To summarize the concert was superb! They truly were one of my “bucket list” bands. There are actually few remaining that are still touring.
