Tough Lessons in March

13th Day Fishing 2022 – Henry’s Fork

So far this March, fishing has been a bit iffy for me. Today I had a game plan but nothing quite worked out according to the plan. A lot of the day, I was just hoping for a hatch. The weather had warmed and just like we had baetis/BWOs on the Provo a few days before, I was expecting a hatch that never materialized, unless it happened before 10am or after 4pm, the hours I was there. Not wanting to sit there idle, I decided to swing soft hackles and and also some small streamers. At one point I decided to nymph as well but was unable to secure good spots as they were already taken. Given that it was a Tuesday, I was surprised that there were so many anglers there. One of the groups that crowded me were drift boat anglers who posted-up and were wading just below me. The ramps are now open!

The good news in all of this is I manage a couple of fish, but I had to indicator nymph to get them. One was a really nice brown, the other was a smaller rainbow. They are still targeting smaller flies. I also discovered that the bigger rainbows and and cutthroats are now up on the redds in big numbers, which certainly changes the fishing dynamic.
